Analytic SQL Window Functions - Why you need these in your toolbox

Speaker: Gary Melhaff

Summary: This is an introduction to understanding and use of analytic window functions. It also covers the important role they can serve within a data warehouse ecosystem. If you code SQL queries and don’t already use these functions then you will after seeing this presentation. There will be live demos using the Adventure Works database and you will hear where analytic functions have been used to solve real world problems. It will include a brief overview of an existing data warehouse architecture showing how multiple Microsoft technologies such as SSIS, MDS, and SSAS integrate within the ecosystem.

About Gary: Gary Melhaff has been in IT for 3 decades and has worked extensively with Oracle, Teradata and Sql Server technologies. The last 2 decades have focused on data warehousing and master data management. His previous job was as a solution architect within an enterprise-wide data warehouse initiative at one of the largest banks in the US. He is currently the data architect on an Enterprise Data Warehouse team at World Vision.

Introduction to PowerShell focused on SQL Server.

Speaker: Piotr Palka, ITS 5 Department of Corrections, WA

Summary: We will cover basic syntax of the PowerShell, tools which you can use to develop scripts and how to integrate scripts with the database. You will learn how to connect to multiple databases, execute TSQL commands and aggregate query results. Prepare for lot of demos.

About Piotr: Piotr Palka has been working with high volume data processing systems since 1999. Piotr implemented and maintained multiple systems for telecommunication companies, including call records processing, billing and customer relationship management and operation support systems. Now he is lead data warehouse developer for Washington State Department of Corrections. He regularly delivers technical presentations at Olympia, WA, PASS chapter.

Call for Speakers

Peter Palka is trying to put together a 6 month calendar of speakers and topics. Peter would like to start having two presentations per meeting. One topic could be a short 15 minute presentation and then the other could be a 60-90 minute topic. 

 If you have done something you think is noteworthy that others could benefit from, Peter would like to hear from you. He is willing to help you turn any ideas you have into a presentation. OASSUG is a user group, provided and supported by local area SQL Server users.

  Remember you don’t have to do a full-blown 90 minute presentation; even just a short presentation would be a great way to support our local SQL Server user group.
