Featured Presentation

Becoming a Master by Giving It All Away

Speaker: Michael Wall, Senior DBA Great Western Malting

Summary: It has been said that “novices absorb knowledge like a sponge, intermediates hoard it for themselves, and masters just simply give it away.” The community spirit of PASS is for like-minded professionals to interact and share knowledge. But how do you do this in your own workplace? What happens when Bob takes off with one day of notice? How do you manage when Jane unfortunately has to spend a month in the hospital? The only way to truly become a master at your craft is to share your precious knowledge with your peers and workmates. We will discuss past and new trends in learning and knowledge transfer, the reasons why you should (and shouldn’t) pass on knowledge, and methods for making this happen in your workplace and in your life. Be prepared for an interactive and lively discussion and to walk away with some new concepts that are going to make you think about how you too can become a Master!

About Michael: Michael Wall has been a Database Administrator since he was asked if he wanted to be one after successfully managing the Y2K upgrade project on over fifty UNIX servers. Immediately thrust into a major Oracle upgrade project, he has since then managed multiple challenges and now is the sole DBA for a global food processing company responsible for both SQL Server and Ingres databases. He has presented at multiple PASS User Groups and at SQL Saturdays and is in the leadership group for Oregon SQL. He has been on the planning team for a number of SQL Saturdays and plans to keep helping as much as he can!

Call for Speakers

Peter Palka is trying to put together a 6 month calendar of speakers and topics. Peter would like to start having two presentations per meeting. One topic could be a short 15 minute presentation and then the other could be a 60-90 minute topic.

If you have done something you think is noteworthy that others could benefit from, Peter would like to hear from you. He is willing to help you turn any ideas you have into a presentation. OASSUG is a user group, provided and supported by local area SQL Server users.

Remember you don’t have to do a full-blown 90 minute presentation; even just a short presentation would be a great way to support our local SQL Server user group.
